Friday, May 24, is International Day of Vesak — the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world.

This day commemorates the birth, the attainment of enlightenment and the passing away of the Buddha. It seeks to bring Buddhist communities and institutions closer together to foster cooperation and friendship with each other at national and international levels.

“Now more than ever, we need the spirit of non-violence to help inspire peace and quell conflict,” says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. “I offer my best wishes to believers celebrating Vesak Day.”
