UNESCO's Commitment to Sustainable Development

image

“Achieving genuine sustainable development calls for more than green investment and low carbon technologies. Besides its economic and ecological dimensions, the social and human dimensions are central factors for success. Ultimately, we must focus our efforts on building green societies.” Irina Bokova, Director-General, UNESCO.

2500th volume of the UN Treaty Series

On the occasion of the publication of the 2500th volume of the United Nations Treaty Series, the Secretary-General met with the staff involved in the preparation, publication and dissemination of the Series on 10 February 2012.

The Secretary-General noted that “this milestone provides an excellent opportunity to highlight the critical role this publication has played over the past 66 years”.

The United Nations Treaty Series is mandated by the Charter of the United Nations. Article 102 of the Charter creates a legal obligation for the Member States to submit for registration with the Secretariat every treaty and international agreement they entered into as soon as possible after the Charter had come into force and for the Secretariat to publish it.

“This is not just a bureaucratic requirement”, the Secretary-General said. He emphasized that “those treaties and international agreements that have not been registered cannot be invoked before any organ of the United Nations”.

The Secretary-General underlined that “By making treaties widely accessible to Member States and to the public, the Treaty Series collection has a pivotal role in strengthening the rule of law and promoting transparency in international relations. The Series is the most comprehensive and authoritative source of information of its kind. It is also keeping pace with the times, and is now available on the Treaty Section’s website, which will progressively become the primary gateway for information on published treaties.”

Mobilising Men in Practice

image

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund has released a report titled Mobilising Men in Practice: Challenging sexual and gender-based violence in institutional setting. This report  documents the work of one such effort, the Mobilising Men initiative, led by the Institute of Development Studies (University of Sussex in Britain) with support from UNFPA. Through partnerships with civil society groups in India, Kenya and Uganda beginning in 2009, th initiative trained men to be team activists in seeking gender balances. By immersing the participants in a programme of dialogue and action that challenge the inherent nature of male privileges and power structures in society – government, academia and workplace – the men learned a lot about themselves and how they can begin to address inequities.

Syrian Arab Republic: Thematic study on participatory rangeland management in the Badia

image

International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has released a publication titled Syrian Arab Republic: Thematic study on participatory rangeland management in the Badia. This publication was a parternership project between  IFAD supported by Badia Rangeland Development Project (BRDP), which ran from 1998 to 2010 and was cofinanced by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development. Lessons learned from projects implemented over the past four decades in Syria and many other countries in the region show that top-down decisions involving design and implementation that ignore the role of herders and traditional uses of the natural resources and infrastructure (especially water) do not result in sustainable changes.\
